Fitch was one of the most prolific botanical artists of all time. His illustrations were stunning, and he used vivid colors for his work. In 1834, Walter began working for William Hooker.

Walter Hood Fitch, a Scottish botanical artist and illustrator, was born Feb. 28, 1817. While still quite young, Fitch came to the attention of William J. Hooker, who was professor of botany in Glasgow and had inherited the editorship of Curtis' Botanical Magazine ( CBM ).

Walter Hood Fitch was born in Glasgow in 1817. By the age of 13 he was employed as an apprentice pattern drawer at a mill. He took to botanical illustration following a meeting with William Jackson Hooker, who was so impressed by young Fitch's artistic talents that he bought him out of his apprenticeship.
